Our Story

Where Indian Heritage Meets British Homes

Our Story

Bridging two worlds through exquisite traditional craftsmanship.

Who We Are

Kaanha Treasure creates exquisite handmade decorations that bridge two worlds — bringing the finest traditional Indian embroidery techniques to British homes. We transform centuries-old crafts like zardosi, zari, dapka, and intricate beadwork into contemporary treasures that transcend seasonal decoration.

Our journey began with a vision to preserve these endangered art forms while creating sustainable livelihoods for skilled artisans in India. Each piece tells a story of cultural heritage, ethical craftsmanship, and the beauty that emerges when traditions travel across continents.

Design & Making

Our artisans in India are master craftspeople, each specialising in specific traditional techniques passed down through generations. Every Kaanha Treasure piece begins as an original design, hand-drawn and transferred onto fabric stretched on traditional wooden embroidery frames.

Using chalk markings as guides, our artisans meticulously apply zardosi (gold and silver thread work), dapka (coiled metallic thread), and carefully selected beads to create three-dimensional works of art. This hands-on approach allows us to offer personalised and bespoke designs, creating unique pieces that become family heirlooms rather than disposable decorations.

Style & Quality

Every piece is designed from scratch, combining traditional Indian artistry with contemporary British aesthetics. We source premium fabrics and use only superior quality beads, crystals, and authentic zari threads. Unlike mass-produced ornaments, each piece is individually crafted with attention to detail that only human hands can provide.

From delicate bumblebees with golden wings to majestic elephants adorned with jewel-toned beadwork, our collections offer sophisticated pieces that work as year-round home accents, not just seasonal decorations.

Each decoration is handmade, so slight variations in colour, stitching, and finish may occur. These differences are part of what makes every piece unique.

Meet the Founder

Girija Taylor

Girija Taylor, Founder of Kaanha Treasure

A keen traveller with a deep appreciation for art and culture, I grew up in India immersed in its rich textile traditions. From an early age, I learnt that zardosi and dapka work weren't just decorative techniques, they were stories sewn in gold and silver, carrying generations of artistic expertise in every thread.

North East England is my home now, and I find myself in a wonderful position to bring both worlds together. Kaanha Treasure was founded on exactly this dual viewpoint: understanding what resonates in British households while staying true to the originality and soul of Indian handicraft.

I visit India frequently, sitting with talented artisans who share my passion for keeping these traditional skills alive. Together, we've built an ethical, environmentally conscious process where fair wages and dignified working conditions are simply non-negotiable. Every material, each thread, bead, and fabric are personally reviewed against our quality and sustainability standards before it can become part of a Kaanha Treasure piece.

Roustam, Girija's golden retriever

And when the day is done, it's Roustam, my golden retriever and most loyal companion, who reminds me what really matters. A wagging tail, a walk in the fresh air, and the quiet joy of a life built around things made with love. He makes every single day better, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Our Ethics & Sustainability

All zari thread offcuts are collected and recycled. We source fabrics from registered, sustainable suppliers and use no animal products or feathers.

Safe Workshops

Our workshop provides a safe, hygienic environment that honours traditional working methods while ensuring modern standards of worker welfare.
